A downloadable game for Windows

The neighbouring village has gone quiet and there are reported sightings on zombies in the woods surrounding the village! Your party is tasked with investigating these reports and travelling to the village to see if everything is OK.

Chessman Adventures is a turn based strategy game rooted in a world of chess. You control a party of adventurers as they combat the undead to save the townsfolk of a nearby village.

This game is the final project for my Master's degree in Game Enterprise and is a proof of concept for a game that I would like to continue working on. This project has 12 weeks of development time by myself in Unreal Engine. I had also designed the character models in Blender.

The music and sound effects were provided by Kirk Boyd Productions (https://soundcloud.com/kirk-boyd-833378011), and the environmental assets were sourced from the asset pack 'Stylized Graveyard' by AleksandrIvanov on Fab (https://www.fab.com/listings/d5d9bf30-0ddd-4b94-abe6-ea387bd88943).

I would really appreciate feedback on this project to help me understand what areas of the game are enjoyed, and where you think the game could be improved. Additionally, while I have strived to squash bugs as they appear, I would also appreciate it if you could let me know of any bugs that you may find so I can fix them as soon as possible.

UPDATE Version 1.3 - 12/09/25

A small patch to fix a few issues that have been reported since I uploaded the game (detailed below). If any more issues present themselves while you play, please don't hesitate to report them in the comments or in the form linked above. I will be continuing work on this project and making a large update in December 2025.

- Fixed issue that caused loss of mouse cursor if a player character moves through a Ranger's Trap.

- Fixed Issue with character abilities moving after being placed, or being placed more than once.

- When moving a character, players can now click on the characters occupying tiles to move, not just the tile itself.

- When a characters abilities have been used, they will no longer show up as options when clicking on the character.

- Corrected many typos in the UI.

- Tentatively Solved an issue with the AI being too passive and not capturing player pieces when presented with the opportunity. All enemies should now be more aggressive in how they approach the player and will capture if presented with the opportunity.

A fun tactical chess-inspired adventure! I also experienced cursor loss on by stepping on a trap by the ranger. After alt-tabbing managed to click next turn and continue playing.

The wave-based level seemed pretty challenging due to so many zombies, but I managed to crowd control pretty well with the warrior so that not too many got past.

Thanks for letting me know about the issue, I'm hoping to get it fixed and patched by the end of the week.

Glad you were able to survive the challenge! The Fighter's abilities really come into their own on that level.

Thanks for playing!

Hi there! Been trying out your game for an hour after a friend mentioned it to me, so far so good! Haven't written a form yet, want to try the game a few more times but I thought to mention I did find a game breaking bug for ya. A mis-click put my Ranger onto his own trap and killed him xD Which was fine, until my cursor stopped responding. Repeated a couple times and seems consistent. Hope that helps on the bug squashing front!

Hi, sorry to hear that you are experiencing this bug, unfortunately, it is something I became aware of during some playtests at the end of last week. I think that what is happening is an oversight on my part, that when the character is killed during it's movement, the process for bringing the controls back after moving isn't triggering. As a temporary solution, you should be able to still navigate the cursor (while invisible) to the 'end turn' button in the bottom right corner and click that to return the cursor and continue the game.

My aim is to patch the game the next time I can get in the engine (which may not be until mid September unfortunately) and make sure that this, and other issues are resolved in one sweep.

Thank you so much for playing the game and I hope you are enjoying the experience outside of this issue. I look forward to getting more feedback and don't hesitate to report any more issues (big or small) that you encounter.

Please don't apologize! I would be lying if I said finding bugs in games wasn't half the fun for me ;) But I'll be more then happy to report what I find!! If you don't mind me writing any I find in the comments here I'll do that, but if you have anywhere else you'd prefer further reports I'll happily send them elsewhere.

Finished my first run and have to say this is a really fun and interesting concept!

Hi, apologies for the late reply (lots of major life events happening at once in the last month so I've barely had time to catch up on the game.

I'm going to look into a way of receiving feedback either through a dedicated email or possibly a social media account for the game, but until then, feel free to keep posting feedback here. It's all welcomed.

Thank you again for playing and I'm so glad you're enjoying what I've made. I'll be resuming production on the game this week starting with a patch to fix the major bugs that have already been found. Then I have plenty of ideas of how to expand the game.
